🤙 Surf Etiquette in Mirleft, Morocco: Respect the Locals, Protect the Spots, How to Be a Responsible Surfer with Spot-M Surf Camp in Mirleft And Around The World
Learn essential surf etiquette, how to earn respect in Moroccan line-ups, and why keeping secret spots truly secret matters. At Spot-M Surf Camp in Mirleft, we teach surfing with heart, humility, and respect for the local culture.
At Spot-M Surf Camp Mirleft, surfing isn’t just a sport—it’s a culture, a connection, and a code. Whether you’re brand new to surfing or a travelling barrel chaser, knowing how to behave in the water is as essential as knowing how to paddle out.
Our coastline is rich in empty line-ups, powerful waves, and untouched beauty—but with that privilege comes responsibility. Here’s how to surf with respect, protect the places you visit, and represent yourself (and Spot-M!) in the best way possible.
🏄♂️ 1. Know the Basics of Surf Etiquette
Before you even dip a toe in the water, understand the unwritten rules that govern every line-up:
-
Don’t drop in: The surfer closest to the peak has right of way. Always look before committing to a wave.
-
Don’t snake: Paddling around others to get a better position is a fast track to losing respect.
-
Communicate: A quick “going left” or “you got it” avoids collisions and builds good vibes.
-
Apologise if needed: We all make mistakes. Own it, smile, and move on.
-
Respect learners: If someone’s trying to improve, give them space—not attitude.
These rules apply everywhere—but especially when you’re a visitor in someone else’s home break.
🌍 2. Respect the Locals – You’re a Guest in the Line-Up
In places like Mirleft, the local surf community is welcoming, but not naive. They see everything.
To earn their respect:
-
Observe before you paddle out—watch how others surf the spot.
-
Be friendly—say hello, smile, and keep a good vibe.
-
Support local surf shops, cafés, and guides—put your money into the community.
-
Learn a few local words in Darija or Arabic—it shows heart and goes a long way.
At Spot-M, we’re proud of our Anglo-Moroccan roots and our long-standing connection with the Mirleft surf scene. We teach our guests to surf with humility, gratitude, and awareness.
🗺️ 3. Keep Secret Spots Secret (Seriously)
If you’re lucky enough to be guided to one of Spot-M’s lesser-known surf gems, here’s the golden rule:
🔇 You don’t talk about secret spots. Ever.
That means:
-
❌ No geotagging on Instagram
-
❌ No naming beaches in blogs or videos
-
❌ No telling mates back home where they are
Even the best secret spots in Morocco can lose their magic overnight if they go public. What was once a pristine, quiet wave becomes overcrowded, overhyped, and overrun. You will never see us posting about, naming or giving away locations of these spots ever. We know the consequences and always try to maintain our presence as part of the community of Mirleft and South Morocco. We are all surfers here at Spot-M and we care deeply about the local surf community and with this comes a need to be responsible and help to preserve the secrecy of spots where needed. there are already enough famous spots for everyone, lets not be part of the problem!
By keeping these locations private, you’re helping preserve authentic surf experiences—for yourself, for locals, and for future surfers.
🌊 4. Surf With Spot-M = Surf With Respect
At Spot-M, we do more than teach you to surf—we teach you how to belong in the line-up.
✔️ We surf in small groups to reduce impact.
✔️ We provide local insights and education on every guided session.
✔️ We partner with local surfers and families, creating a surf experience built on trust and community.
✔️ We priorities respect, safety, and sustainability.
Most of the time, we’re surfing empty or near-empty breaks—it’s one of the joys of Mirleft! But on the occasions we do surf more popular spots, remember:
-
Stick to proper surf etiquette (see section 1).
-
Don’t crowd or dominate the line-up.
-
Be an example of how to surf respectfully.
💬 When Others Go Low, You Stay High
Sometimes, you’ll see behaviour that doesn’t align with Spot-M’s values.
That might be:
-
🧍♂️ Locals being hassled by other surf schools
-
🏄♂️ Surfers dropping in or snaking recklessly
-
🌍 Visitors treating the ocean or beach carelessly
When this happens, don’t rise to it. Stay calm. Surf clean. Set an example.
✨ When they go low, we stay high.
And if you ever feel uncomfortable, confused, or concerned, tell a Spot-M team member. We’ll listen, we’ll help, and we’ll always have your back.
